Larry McGinnis

LHS Class of '56

12/2/11

Want to tell you that Larry was discharged from the hospital late Tuesday and is back at his group home. He is doing much better and we are hopeful that he will be able to remain there and not have to go to a more skilled facility at this time.  Thanks again, Kathy McGinnis

11/27/11

Larry was admitted Thanksgiving Day with an acute UTI, he was improving and the doctors felt he would be going home today. He has now developed severe spasms and tremors so he will have to be evaluated by a neurologist tonight or tomorrow then we will go from there.  There is no way he can go back to his group home as he is.
Will keep you informed. Kathy

Hi Thom, Have been meaning to tell you this for months now, but we really appreciate the mailings to Larry.  I read the names of everyone and he says he remembers them, at least most of them.  I think that some of the names ring a bell, but doubt he really remembers them.  He definitely remembers you, Thom, even how you spell your name!

Larry has been about the same for months now, listening passively to conversation, smiling some, dozing off some, but always in a pleasant mood.  Matt, our son in Boston, came in with his family a couple weeks ago, and Larry was here almost everyday and really enjoyed all the kids and grandkids coming and going.  We got out an old photo album of his family and he remembered so many!
Do keep in touch, and keep those letters coming whenever you can!  Again, my thanks! Hello to All!

Thom talked to Kathy and she indicated that Larry is not doing very well, and is down to 158 lbs.  He does appreciate hearing from classmates and friends, so take time to remember him with a card or note.

Larry  is still in the group home close to myself and the three of our four kids, and I or one of them get him out almost everyday.  He is content and well-taken care of , and for that we are very thankful.  He uses a walker to get around and his memory as well as his general health is definitely in decline. Thanks again, Kathy

He would be so happy to receive cards, notes, etc. from his "old" classmates.  I would suggest that any writing be printed (as opposed to cursive), simply worded, and easy to read. He does read large print newspapers, etc.  and seems to understand the text if it is written in short, concise sentences.

Thanks again.  Will keep you updated on any changes with Larry.  Right now, he is content, well-taken-care-of, and not in any pain whatsoever.  He knows all of us and is always happy to see us, esp. the grandkids!  We take him out often for walks, lattes (we are in Seattle, after all!) and family events.  As I told you before, we just take one day at a time, not knowing what the future will bring.
My best to all!  Kathy McGinnis

For those of you who do not know, Larry has a type of dementia which has progressed slowly over the past several years. At this time he has significant difficulty with his memory, language, and cognitive skills and requires 24 hour care.  He still enjoys spending time with his family, especially his five grandchildren, taking walks, and continues to maintain his interest in music and cars.  He and his family are grateful that the dementia has progressed slowly, giving them the opportunity to travel and spend time together. All prayers and words of encouragement are most appreciated.  Will keep you informed through and the class website and blog.

Thank you all so much.  Kathy McGinnis
