DR. CLYDE M. SMITH, D.O. Dr. Clyde M. Smith, 83, of Liberty, MO, died Tuesday, November 27, 2001, at New Mark Care Center. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Friday, November 30, at Liberty United Methodist Church. Burial in White Chapel Cemetery. Visitation will be from 10-11 a.m. prior to the funeral on Friday. The family suggests memorial gifts to The University of Health Sciences or City Union Mission. Dr. Smith was born May 12, 1918 in Rochester, PA. He was preceded in death by his parents, Gilbert and Anna M. Smith and two brothers, Roy and Wayne Smith. He graduated from Rochester High School where he was president of his class all four years. He was a graduate of Slippery Rock State Teachers College and earned his medical degree from the Kansas City College of Osteopathic Medicine. He was a member of Phi Sigma Gamma, Epsilon; Psi Sigma Alpha scholastic honorary fraternity and the Society of Neuropsychiatry. He had a rotating internship at Lakeside Hospital in 1942-43, and was a resident physician there in 1943-44. He was a lifetime member of the American Osteopathic Association, Missouri Osteopathic Association and Charter President of the West District Osteopathic Association in Clay County. He was president of his alumni association in 1959. He was a Rotarian and member of the Lions Club, a Mason and member of Angerova Lodge No. 193 A.F.&A.M.; Knight Templar of Liberty Commadery No. 6 and a Cryptic Mason of Liberty Council No. 50. He also served as Liberty's Chairman for the Cancer Drive in 1964. Initially enlisting in the Marine Corps during WWII, Dr. Smith was instructed that he could best serve the nation by helping fill the critical shortage of physicians in Missouri by selecting a small town to establish a family practice. He and his wife chose Liberty and he began his practice, serving Liberty families for over 30 years. From 1945-50 he served as athletic team physician at William Jewell College and from 1952-58 he was team physician at Liberty High School. Dr. Smith was a charter member of the Liberty Hills Country Club. After retiring his practice in 1974, Dr. Smith joined the Emergency Medicine Department at University Hospital, where he served as Director of Emergency Medicine. In 1980 he became a member of the Emergency Physician's Foundation and was certified in basic life support and advanced acute trauma life support. Mayor Richard Berkley appointed him a member of the Physicians Advisory Board. He was a charter member that created the MAST emergency ambulance system in Kansas City. In 1977-81 he served as Treasurer to the Missouri Chapter of the American College of Emergency Physicians. In 1985-88 he was Director of the University of Health Sciences clinics, from where he retired in 1988. Dr. Smith is survived by his wife of 571/2 years, Mary Jule Smith of the home; three sons and their wives, Douglas M. and Harriet Smith of Tulsa, OK, Craig M. and Patricia Smith of Olathe, KS and Brian M. and Michelle Smith of Kansas City, MO. He leaves six grandchildren, Brian David Smith and Brandon Smith of Olathe, KS, Molly Virginia Smith, Brooklyn, NY, Katie Myles Smith, Emily Sara Smith and Matthew Albert Smith, all of Kansas City. He also leaves his sister, Katy Portman, New Brighton, PA; nieces, Laura Frankovich, New Brighton, PA and Donna Riggs, Pittsfield, NC; and nephews, Tom Smith, Prairie Village, KS and Don Smith of Texas. Clyde loved to travel, visiting all of the United States, some states many times. He always insisted that they check out colleges and universities, mainly to view their athletic facilities, as he was an avid sportsman, having played football and basketball. Dr. Smith was dedicated to family and a life of medicine caring for patients and friends.
